Used Cooking Oils-if incorrectly disposed-are a problematic waste with harmful environmental effects, but if collected and recycled it can constitute an energy resource. Recycling UCO to biodiesel contributes to the reduction of environmental pollution and to fossil fuel dependence.
In Rethymno a pilot project for UCO collection was launched in 2014 (Green Partnership project) with a limited number of collection points in the city centre and in schools. An educational campaign regarding the advantages of UCO collection for biodiesel production was conducted involving the school community showing that, with proper informational campaigns and citizens’ motivation, there is a big potential. In 2019, through CIVITAS DESTINATIONS, Rethymno expanded the collection point network out of the city borders with smart UCO collection containers and a platform to collect statistic data and to calculate the best route for the collector depending on the fullness of each container.
Main objectives
- Launch of UCO collection network
- Behavioural change to sustainable waste management
- Raise awareness and change behaviour about the improper disposal of UCO
