In the municipality of Halandri an innovative household fermentable waste HFW (Household Food Waste) valorization approach was developed within the framework of the H2020 project Waste4think.
The separately collected HFW underwent drying and shredding in a local facility, leading to a biomass product named FORBI (Food Residue Biomass) which is homogeneous, its volume and weight is reduced by up to 80%, it is odours-free and it can be stored without deterioration for prolonged periods of time.
FORBI was used as feedstock to produce biogas, which was upgraded (≥98% methane) and compressed to 200 bar to generate bio-CNG, which was as fuel for the waste collection trucks substituting fossil fuels.
FORBI was also co-composted with prunings; the end-product was packaged and distributed to the participants.
Main objectives
- Waste diversion from landfill
- Waste valorization to high value-added products
- Raising awareness of citizens
